Western Saddle Seat Size Calculator

*NOTE FOR CHILDREN OR YOUTH SIZES SMALLER THAN 14" When measuring for a child's Western saddle, have them sit down in a chair. Once seated, use a measuring tape to measure the length of their upper leg from the knee to their rear. The saddle should be about 10% longer than the child's upper leg. For example: If the child's leg measures 9 inches, then the child's Western saddle should be 10 inches.

Are you fitting for a Tucker Saddle?

Calculated Seat Size:

There is a lot of room for personal preference with seat sizing, but as a general rule it is better to error on the side of ordering a seat size that is too large rather than erring on the side of a seat that will be too small.

Things to Consider

  • Tucker adds 1/2inch to their seat sizes (due to thick seat padding)
    16.5” Tucker = 16” normally

  • Barrel riders usually take 1” less on the seat size
    16” Trail Rider = 15” Barrel Rider

  • Ranch (slick seats) usually ride smaller (1/2inch seat size) so they don’t slide around
16” is for most men, 15” for most women

  • Trail Saddles with High Cantles (5”) make the seat sizes feel smaller
Trail Saddle with 5” cantle will feel smaller in the seat than one with a 3.5” cantle

  • English Saddles don’t convert exactly but often are 2” bigger
    18” English = 16” Western

  • Riders with inseams under 30” or 5’ tall and under often need custom cut fenders
Tall riders with long legs but lighter weight may need custom cut fenders as well

Checking the Fit

  • General Guideline is about 3 fingers between your thigh and the swell.

Comfort and quality I've had gaited horses for over 25 years. I used to ride with a saddle seat saddle. I am turning 65 and I mostly trail ride. I got this saddle after watching Julie goodnight video about the saddle. I love the light weight, cut back/more English style. The seat is comfortable and I feel secure riding in it. Great quality saddle.
Pros:Light weight.

Changing review several months laterI still stand by the saddle is comfortable, but Im really doubting the overall quality. I realize they are trying to cut back on weight by using thin plastics, but that doesnt stand up. I use this saddle multi-purpose but mostly trails. I was riding and my horse stumbled pitching me forward in the saddle. Now Im not huge, 58 and weigh 165, but just the forward momentum caused the saddle stirrup to crack right down the middle. The saddle shop provided excellent customer service and they replaced my stirrup right away. But then the D ring on the back of the saddle, I had my second horse lead line tied to it loosely while on the trail. She pulled her head back and the D ring snapped right off. I think this saddle is a good fit if you do light riding, but its not rugged and wont hold up to hard riding. Disappointed in the cut corners. Its also a real pain to find girth straps outside of buying the expensive one thats branded only for this saddle. I use an australian girth straps to get around that.
Pros:Comfort
Cons:Cheap plastic parts and doesnt hold up to tough wear.

Love the saddle!Omg, you get what you pay for. This saddle is so comfortable. I was a little skeptical when they claim this saddle will correct your posture, but damn if it doesnt do it! Naturally. Out of the box and on my horse, it feels broken in. The Saddle Shop is my new go to for all my horse related tack purchases. It came within one day and was packed really well. Im a new Julie Goodnight fan. The saddle is comfortable and feels very well made.
Pros:Comfort, weight, fits my horse wonderful
Cons:I would have preferred the walnut color but beggars cant be choosers. The saddle shop offered to order one made for me but it would have taken a couple months. I ended up liking the natural oil after it came in and I saw it on my mare.

Really nice saddleI purchased the Julie Goodnight Cascade because I wanted the stability and comfort of a western saddle but needed a lighter saddle to throw up on my 16.1 H horse. I had the JG Wind River saddle which I purchased last year from Horse Saddle Shop. It was beautiful and very comfortable but was a bit heavy for me. I worked with Josh and decided to go with the Cascade. Its a cross between a western and English saddle. It is comfortable for both me and my horse and I like the close contact I now have with my horse. He is responding much better to my leg cues! I also like that it doesnt have a horn so that when I bend over to avoid a tree branch I dont get the horn in my stomach. Lol. I plan on learning Western Dressage and this saddle will be great for that.

Not my favorite saddleFor starters there is only one cinch you can use with this saddle, I didnt see this in the description so then had to order it and wait for it to come. With the design of this saddle the cinch set back further and Because my horse has a round belly it could easily move and fall to the side.
The seat is very comfortable and its a nice looking saddle but it could use a few more rings for tying and connecting items.
Pros:Comfortable seat
Cons:Only one brand of cinch can be used due to the buckle size.

I love this saddle!I was hesitant to spend so much on a saddle but it turns out to be the best purchase I've made in a long time. It is comfortable for the rider and puts you in correct riding position. It also fits both of my horses well.

very cormfortable saddlegreat light well made saddle. i like the english billets especially cuz it holds the back of the saddle down. nice free swing stirrups too! well made with lots of tie strings and nice conchos
Pros:flex two holds my horse well. seat is nicly padded and saddle is light weight
Cons:the billet placement rubs my leg and the only thing i do not like is the english girth has oversized buckles to fit the billets. i would like normal size buckles so i could have a much better girth

Perfect Endurance SaddleThis saddle is awesome! Once you remove the saddle strings, grab strap, and hoof pick holder, and then replace the conchos with stainless steel saddle dees as well as install endurance stirrups, it's the perfect endurance saddle. My horses are super happy with this saddle.

The centerfire rigging is wonderful, but the little leather piece slides down unless you put a small tie on one of the sides. The little leather piece actually is useful though. The saddle is quality leather, so you'll need to apply a conditioner and let it soak in for at least a day. I also replaced the girth with a double-ended elastic girth from Triple E Mfg, which has the wider buckles.

My saddle is now perfect!
Pros:Super comfortable and flex tree.
Cons:All the blingy stuff. The hoof pick holder and grab strap are offputting. It takes about an hour to remove all that blingy stuff.

Julie Goodnight Cascade Crossover Flex2 Trail 7253A lot of research and excellent assistance from Horse Saddle Shop personnel resulted in the best purchase I have ever made. The saddle is light weight, fits me and my horse (no more asking for help to saddle and no more slipping of saddle while ridding).

Julie Goodnight Cascade Crossover Flex 2 saddleSaddle fits several of our horses beautifully.
Nicely made but leather is very stiff.
The english style billets are very wide and too bulky where they attach to the rigging rings and cinch. The rigging rings are set too high up. It would be better if they were set lower ie. dropped. The cinch has oversized buckles to accommodate these extra wide billets and it sores the leg and knees of the riders. I have had to cut the billets down in width to use these saddles. We purchased two.Horses seem to move very well with the Flex 2 tree. Excellent for horse, good for rider with some adjustments.
Pros:Flex 2 tree fits horses nicely.
Cons:rigging rings too high should be dropped, billets too wide and require big buckle cinch. This is very uncomfortable for riders.
